Thrift - Hornsea & Danish Candleholders

Only things I managed to pick up this week thrifting, plus paid mucho bills for them. Enamel pair of Danish candlesticks (a rare find for me) Unfortunately, the old biddy shop decided to Sharpie all the scratches - hate when they do crap like that!

Couldn't resist the minty Hornsea tea and coffee canisters SOLD. I love anything Hornsea (also a rare find for me) SOLD.

Thrift - Bennington Trigger Mug

Decided I was going to be there when stores opened today. Was 40 minutes late! The 3 bay rosewood wall unit was at the old biddy shop for $320 or $350. It looks smaller than Danish pieces and there are no markings - turns out it was from Yugoslavia. I thought the price was fair but no bargain considering it's a thrift store. Took a photo but I think the camera is broken?

But I did find a 5.5" Dala horse by Nils Olsson, Sweden which was not cheap SOLD. A Japanese Kokeshi doll with two character stamps SOLD

For my sister, I picked up a 1960's wood box fish purse made in Japan-it's missing the handle and snap but I couldn't resist the graphic fish. Found her a orange red litho tin cigarette box that I thought she could use for props, it's marked "Ardath Tobacco Co. London, Leeds & Dublin." Reminded me of London's old telephone boxes.

Can you believe, I found not one thing at my fave thrift store! It was bare bones too.

At GWill I found a Bennington Potters, Vermont "Smithsonian Institution" Trigger mug, a first! It has two glaze pops that have stained the rim. I passed on a pair of small white Starbucks mugs, a mistake? And last, for $3 a heavy maple cutting board for myself. All in all, I'm pleased with today's finds. Here's hoping for more good luck.

Thrift - Plastic Fantastic!

At my fave thrift store I found a large Sonoma Valley tin, made in England, bright yellow desk organizer, made in Hong Kong. Pack of un-used Gary Larson Christmas cards. Not sure why I bought the little wood "Class of 1934" figurine (reminds me of Russian ones?) but I thought it was cute.

At the old biddy store this mug has been calling me for the past few weeks. I love the graphics but it has a chip in the rim, sadness.

Also saw this Danish style (couldn't find any marking) rosewood wall unit/room divider. You can see the bar unit and shelves piled on the floor. It's dovetailed but not very well-made. The rest hasn't come in yet so it doesn't go on sale till Tuesday. I was told one other person asked about it too. I don't have room for anymore furniture and I doubt it will be cheap.

Thrift - More Cute German Plaques

Paid a lot for these vintage German wall plaques even at 1/2 off but I couldn't resist the cuteness. The lady at the secondhand shop dropped one and chipped it, aurgh!

At another shop found zodiac mug and fish Stavangerflint of Norway mug, the rim has a little chip, sadness. Little stainless steel & rosewood tray from Japan. At the last shop found a second Liberty of London silk scarf for my sister.

Thrift - Little Swedish Figures

Went to four thrift stores a good distance from my house. Haven't found anything at them in ages. Did pick up this interesting lint brush, the hat & brush separate from the lower half. Don't know anything about it. It's pretty well made and heavy. Another birthday Boynton mug (I finally sold one)

A red Erzgebirge Christmas candle holder it spins but is missing a gold star on a spike. Nymolle "Maroc" cup and dish designed by Paul Hoyrup. I didn't notice the big chip until I got home, dang. Yellow Danish Rosti server. Sheffield England "Made Danish" knife with wood handle part of a carving set.

Picked up three swedish ornaments in an Antiques store for my collection. The windmill is marked Svensk Slöjd, which translates to Swedish Handicraft.

Estate Score! Arne Jacobsen Cylinda Fondue

On the way to the Post Office I happened to pass an estate sale with the worlds small signs. But boy, was it it worth it! Saw this baby from across the room! It's Arne Jacobsen's stainless steel 1964-67 "Cylinda Line" fondue pot for Stelton Denmark.

Originally designed in 1952 by world-renowned designer Eva Zeisel, is the "Classic Century" teapot this is a current version marked Crate & Barrel, made in England. SOLD A small matte white "Van Briggle" of Colorado Springs pot I picked up super cheap! Guess, it pays to watch "Antiques Roadshow" on occasion. SOLD

A silk scarf made in Italy for the sister. And the Richard Scarry book for myself. I hope to one day find some of his Big Books because they were a favorite as a child.

Estate - Dang Missed a Good One!

I've been terrible keeping up with my posts. The thought of having to wash everything just makes me to tired to take a picture.

Picked up the Boda snowball for myself at the huge house of a graphic designer. Passed on an overpriced 1994 Nambe S+P set. Why would you pay so much for a house and fill it with 80% IKEA? A few of us were joking over the prices of IKEA ware that was cheaper at IKEA. And people were lined up. Crazy.

I should have gone to the sale down the street from me (arrived 3 hours after opening) The house was packed full of funky items! So much stuff was still in boxes or just crowded behind furniture, a true diggers paradise. The prices weren't bad on most items but condition was an issue.

Only ended up getting a few things. The teak Swedish display with drawers was a very reasonable price. I think, it's to heavy to ship so I'll use it for my wood figurine collection. A little flower tin, a funky Coramatic clock made in Japan. SOLD And an unsigned Salt + Pepper set that I have no info on but aren't they cool! SOLD

A "Liberty of London" flower scarf for the sister. Blue flowered enamel copper dish that still has the "Sascha Brastoff California" sticker. SOLD Signed baby owl oil painting. SOLD Cork pencil holder. SOLD

Oh, and I bought a small credenza that I have to pick up. Where do I put it? And a couple of design books that I forgot to photo.

Thrift - Part Duex

Aside from the credenza here are some of the items I picked up. The only thing I found at the old biddy shop was the glass Chemex missing the wood collar (have 2 now) Had to explain to the ladies what it was - probably a bad idea, I bet the minute I left, they looked on Ebay. Did notice that now some of their mugs are $1 instead of the usual 50 cents. Paid $2.50 for my little Arabia mug the other day. I'm griping.

I was intrigued by the stack of Tupperware bowls because they have colored little plates inside (see pink on atop) Not so exciting, I find out they are for making ice cream sandwiches. An older piece of pastel TupperWare. I don't know why I picked it up, I don't need to start collecting pastel, since I already collect the 70's colors, sigh.

Little Hallmark 1979 angel ornament in green box, made in HongKong. Quail Couroc tray. Maple wood juicer, muddler and stirrer. 1976 Bicentennial eagle hot plate SOLD.

'Graymark Binary Clock' was originally a kit for nerds. Hubby stole it for desk at work and then it broke. Flower fabric last week I found the matching sheer fabric to this, will sell.

Bunch of little red cardinals. Tiny little Swedish Christmas tree candleholder by Gunnar Soderberg SOLD. A terrible handpainted ornament I thought to rescue. A massive leather belt with brass buckle stamped 'Made in England' Did you wear this with a prairie dress? For my sister SOLD. A lastly, very thick Scandinavian style woven textile belt.

Thrift - Arabia Anemone

Went to my thrifts today. From my old biddy store, little "Anemone" cup by Arabia of Finland designed in 1960 by Ulla Procope and handpainted by AR, I have yet to find out who the initials stand for? A lot of skill was required to paint the single tone blue. Photographs simple do not do the painting justice. While I originally thought that the cup might be missing a saucer it might be a stand alone mug? Confirmed by a Finn that there is a saucer to the cup.

At my fave thrift found tins from Belgium and England. And a diet scale from 1979 for my collection. Brightly colored Ulster linen tea towel "12 Days of Christmas" made in Ireland and never used. Sold.

Thrift - Nambe Bowl & Snoopy

Nothing exciting from thrifting today. Should have gone to estate sales instead. Three Snoopy root beer glasses.

National Airlines glasses, circa 1965. A little $2 mirror for myself dated 1979 and made in the USA. Oh dear, it's makes things look very big! Milk glass vase. More Butterprint Pyrex for myself, paid $2. And 'Town & Country' Pyrex that match two other pieces I found. SOLD

Little yellow Glasbake bowl, found a pink one a month or so back.

Below, think I overpaid for the 569 Nambe Butterfly bowl because it's not in perfect condition. It was first designed by New Mexico sculptor Richard K. Thomas in 1967. This is a current release of the bowl that retails for $115. It's also made in America! SOLD

Little yellow Tupperware bowl. Green lacquer tray. Pair of Dorothy Thorpe style silver rimmed glasses SOLD. Pair of colonial Avon heads for the hubby. A lone 'Arabesque' Denby of England fork (1964-79) And a little cup marked Denmark.

Remnant "Arrows" of Littell / Klingenberg textile. Ross Littell was a well known textile designer for Herman Miller, Knoll ect in the 50-80's. His designs are still sold today.

Check out my Etsy store!

Thrift - Hear Me Roar

Stopped by the thrift near my mom. Picked up Terence Conran's "Bed and Bath Book" the first one I've ever seen.

A certain Jewish person had donated a lot of Judaica, enamel and pottery items mostly from Israel. All very lovely but they where priced to high for cheapo me. I really should get a camera phone!

Did find hidden, this tiny handmade glazed red clay Japanese vase/pot/saki flask marked "Echizen" I can't read the Japanese mark and will have to ask my cousin to decipher. Funny, still has the Sloans & Kenyon auction house sticker on it (I used to work there eons ago). Likely a tourist item from the Echizen Pottery Village, post 1970. I am fascinated with this piece, it must have have be high fired? In addition, it's well-made, very thin, light and very strong because I accidentally whacked it really hard and not even a mark!

"Echizen pottery is a style that appeared toward the end of the Heian period (794-1192). Echizen ware is made from iron-rich clay that turns a dark, reddish-brown when fired. Traditionally, it is not glazed, but often has subtle patterns of color that result from more or less accidental events that occur during both the shaping and firing of the pieces, such as, for example, ashes from the wood fire clinging to them"

1970's ceramic lion coin bank, made in Japan. The tail is my favorite part. Sold but I broke it during packing, sad face.

Small ceramic blue bird that reminds me of Royal Copenhagen fiance pottery but is unmarked. If anyone has any info.

Pyrex From Mom

Stuff Mom is ready to get rid of... Lemon pitcher, made in Italy.

1973 "Potters Wheel" handmade stoneware creamer designed by David Yorath, one of the great Denby (England) designers.

Mom gave me her excess Pyrex in exchange for the pattern she collects "Butterfly Gold" It's not a pattern I care for and probably the most frequent I see at thrift stores. Patterns in photo "Homestead" and "Horizon Blue"

Orange Tupperware container. It might be missing a handle strap. 1997 Pfaltzgraff "Naturewood" creamer and sugar that mom insists I try and sell on "Itsy" SOLD.

Thrift - Lucite Creamer & Sugar

First, I have to apologize for the terrible photo. Today's finds are from my two local thrift stores.

Hiding in the back is a museum-grade acid free archival box with metal corners for large format negatives, photos or storage, impressed Hollinger Corporation, Fredericksburg VA 22401 and still in business today! For my collection a large Hanson postage scale from 1968. Interestingly, it has an older postage rate sticker underneath. Blue Delft crocus pot, handpainted in Holland.

Three adorable Pyrex "Summer Impressions" in Honeydew (light green) mugs SOLD. IDing thanks to www.pyrexlove.com. Pair of children books "Small Pig" by Arnold Lobel 1969 and "The Stupids Step Out" by Harry Allard 1974.

Stack of mint condition pastel colored party trays by Colonial Plastics of Cleveland, Ohio. I already have two that I've been using as drawer organizers. Plus a white book holder from England (a have a dark blue one that I found at the same thrift a year ago) SOLD

This is probably one of the oddest things I've found thrifting. From the old biddy store came this Plexiglass / Lucite creamer & sugar with tray. It reminds me of the 1980's Post Modern Memphis style. It has that handmade quality to it but I haven't found any information. Plus, it couldn't have been easy to make with all those parts for assemble. SOLD

My sister sent me this linen tea towel all the way from the UK. Love it!

Thrift - Chemex

Thrift stores seem really empty of goods maybe because people are busy with summer vacations. Still I managed to find a few things that are decent. Cartoon puzzle for myself. I often like to do these and then return them to the thrift store.

Jacksons of Piccadilly Tea tin. Replica of a early Victorian tea caddy. Another white lotus bowl (I keep telling myself, I'm going to sell the vast collection and I'm not hoarding)

Berggrens Swedish style "The second day of Christmas" tile with felt back and hook. SOLD

The largest 10 cup Chemex coffee decanter. Missing wood collar but a new replacement can be ordered through the Chemex website. This well designed flask is in the permanent collection of the MOMA and Smithsonian. Invented and designed by German Chemist Peter Schlumbohm in 1941 this apparatus is supposed to brew coffee without any bitterness.

Found another display cabinet (the other is gold) These are actually made to fit between the studs of your wall. All you have to do is cut out a hole in your drywall between the studs and fit the cabinet into the space. You don't even have to finish the drywall because the cabinet frame will cover the unfinished edges. SOLD.

A large tin recipe box by J. Chen. I have a few of their lithographed tins with all the history in a previous post. Circa 1970's. Made in the USA. Little clothes pin Scottish cleaning woman for my wood figure collection. Large set of really nice good quality wood handle fondue forks made in Japan.

Birthday - Victorian Jet Snake Bracelet

Birthday present from my sister as modeled by my sis-in-law. Victorian Jet snake bracelet. I love the black heart dangle. I'm a little afraid to wear it. One good whack and the bracelet would be in a million pieces.
