Thrift - Hippy Trippy Hippos

With thrifts and estate sales being piddly decided to skip visits over the weekend and earlier this week. Might as well have skipped today too. Estate sales for this weekend look unappealing as well.

My mug addiction continues (sorry about the blurry photo) but how could I resist the trio of hippos? SOLD. A Garfield mug SOLD. And another addition to my monstrous collection of Sandra Boynton. A Harrods tea towel and a nice porcelain lidded jar. SOLD

By the way the $750 jewelry box is still there.

Thrift - Bad Thrifts Make Me Cranky

Nothing all that exciting here. Visited 2 thrifts on the way to a store. Shelves were bare at the GWill but did manage to pick up the Boynton mug and a silk scarf for the sis.

At a crappy crappy over-priced thrift for the first time found some items. A Vera "Lacy Fern" vase for Mikasa. Three children books, Mickey Mouse SOLD. Black bear cubs originally designed by Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Pottery in Tennessee SOLD. Hopefully all these items will be up for sale soon in my Etsy shop.

Thrift - Estate Bomb

What was promised as an estate sale with mid century Danish furniture turned out to be early 90s Danish with retail prices. No dealers present means they must by quite familiar with the auction house that runs this particular estate sale and the high prices (hint, they are the same auction house selling the Renoir found at a W. VA flea market for a $20 or something.) All I picked up was a $5 Bodum coffee maker since I kinda ruined the last one, don't ask, it was gross!

Stopped by 3 thrifts and bought Far Side SOLD, Boynton and Christmas mugs. Yes, I know, I don't need more mugs. Six Dorothy Thorpe style lucite napkin holders, loving these! Swedish tomte figure SOLD and a silk horse farm scarf for the sis. Did enjoy a scene of a country boy ragging out one thrift for their high prices, I mean 8 bucks for a mug, whatever?

Charley Harper

Ordered 7 Charley Harper parks posters from the government. They are huge and colorful! They are so nice my sister asked me to order her a set too. Not sure how to hang them since they don't fit in conventional poster frames.

Thrift - Damnation, Where Is My Pendleton?

Thrifts seem dry at the moment. Two Pride Creations, Japan paper mache banks (I've sold 2 in the past) The lion one isn't in great shape but I loved the colors too much to leave behind. Tupperware for myself. Another Time Life Cook Book (mom stole the other one) It has fantastic pics inside.

Pair of wool blankets. Forget the label on one as I sent them to the cleaners. Found nothing at GWill. Passed on the Old Biddy shop as I'm a little afraid that I'll have to eat my shoe, just joking.

Thrift - Don't Have To Eat My Shoe...Yet

My fave thrift had their fall reopening this morning and it was cray-cray! Guess, people wanted to get first crack on the new clothing, I don't have the patience to sift through loads of shirts. Shelves were empty since they were cleaned out. Did enjoy wandering around looking at my donations and the prices, yep things have gone up. I'm always amused to see a higher price than what I paid for it.

At the old biddy shop I chuckled at the $750 1st Dibs jewelery box. Really! Who goes to a thrift store to spend $750 on a box, when as my mom pointed out, they can get jewelry for that. Guess, I won't have to eat my shoe this week. They had added several new items with high listings. But if people buy and the money goes charity, one can't complain too much. I'll try and take pictures next time as I find this ever so amusing. Did pick up a Tonala owl SOLD and a Sandra Boynton card.

Estate - Excuse Me, Do I Look Retarded?

So I actually went to this estate sale early but was caught in commuter and construction traffic for almost an hour. Missed the other primary Pyrex set, jadite pour bowl and some small Norway enameled bowls. This sale mentioned tools and it was mostly men going hog wild throwing things about. People must like to buy old cans of paint?

A new in the box Danish candle holder that is wonderfully crafted and designed SOLD. There are sparkles in the metal and I'm very tempted to keep it. Another wood elephant, my 4th. My first primary Pyrex bowl set. A very cute pull ornament of an alpine skier in sweater and winter cap, made in Austria SOLD. Picked up another damn large green stamp Chemex again SOLD (I'm afraid to count the numbers)! For some reason its now raining these suckers. This one has the optional lid.

Excuse my following rant. The estate sale was just an omen for how the rest of the day would proceed. At my dermatologist office (I never met a derm. there either) I was informed my rate of $175 would double to $350. Evidently, if you give a silent deadpan stare at someone trying to; how do you kindly say "bend you over..." it makes them very nervous! The sales lady tried to give me this story of what a wonderful gift I had been given for all these years (the $175 rate) and I should be appreciative and now gladly pay $350 for a 20 minute visit. Do I appear to be some 6th grade edu-ma-cated bum hick that fell off the turnip truck? Since when are you running a charity and not a business, telling me I should be grateful for paying $175 for a 20 minute visit with an esthetician. Your account and business manager allow you to undercharge people? I assume you offer Botox, dermabrasion and plastic surgery out of the goodness of your heart? Bleh bleh with your bullshit lies, shovel that crap to some other retard 'cause it ain't me.

After the derm. I bombed at several thrifts where I usually find something. Picked a green primary Pyrex bowl (I know, I know, no more Pyrex) and a 1966 1st edition Joan Walsh Anglund book, I have a soft spot for her illustrations. The little Anglund frame was found in a Cape Cod thrift.

Thrift - My Thrift Store Is Now 1st Dibs

Well, my fave thrift was closed for the fall change-over, phooey. Picked-up 70s orange plastic frame and a bottle for the hubbie(maybe.) Passed on the cute box of puppets below at the old biddy shop as they had them priced more than retail.

Funny thing, they have decided to use 1stDibs to price items. This Michael Elkan box on 1stDibs is 3K so the old biddies decided to price it at $750, when it sells for $75-100 on Ebay. I mean come-on, your a thrift store not an over-priced mid-town Manhattan boutique. Question is, will I say anything when I see it again?

At GWill found the cutest pair of illustrated mugs, unfortunately one suffered the usual thrift store damage (forgot my camera) Found this same mug a couple of years ago but with a hairline.

Thrift - Portland Maine & Cape Cod

These are from three thrifts in Portland, Maine and one in Cape Cod. Isn't it crazy, I find more scandi in the north than in a year down south. The CatherineHolm Lotus pan SOLD was just laying on a shelf at GWill along with a pair of Sears mushroom canisters (on left) Found a second wood Viking SOLD. Plus a silk ballerina and a tourist Bahama scarf for the sis.

In Cape Cod picked up the Arabia Finland strawberry jar and four ceramic mushroom canisters (some mushroom thing going on, left a red mushroom cutting board due to damage). At the few thrifts we stopped in, I was hoping rich people donated items ... apparently that is crazy thinking!

We stopped in tons of antique stores in Cape Cod. It made me realize everything on Etsy is a super deal! Have I said that already? Click here to visit my Etsy store!
