Thrift - My Thrift Store Is Now 1st Dibs

Well, my fave thrift was closed for the fall change-over, phooey. Picked-up 70s orange plastic frame and a bottle for the hubbie(maybe.) Passed on the cute box of puppets below at the old biddy shop as they had them priced more than retail.

Funny thing, they have decided to use 1stDibs to price items. This Michael Elkan box on 1stDibs is 3K so the old biddies decided to price it at $750, when it sells for $75-100 on Ebay. I mean come-on, your a thrift store not an over-priced mid-town Manhattan boutique. Question is, will I say anything when I see it again?

At GWill found the cutest pair of illustrated mugs, unfortunately one suffered the usual thrift store damage (forgot my camera) Found this same mug a couple of years ago but with a hairline.

  1. Yeah, you have to laugh when you see a thrift store using 1stdibs as a price guideline. What are they thinking?

    1. They are thinking they are hot shit. They have been setting prices very high lately and it sells so I guess they have gotten brazen :) I was talking to the cashier and she rolled her eyes-said she didn't set prices. Who the hell comes to a thrift store to spend $750 on a jewelery box(not even that well made)? If it sells I'll eat my shoe!

  2. Just wanted to say love the blog, found it a little while back while looking for reference of something (don't remember what) and now find myself checking it out more often then i would have thought. And just realized the whole etsy link thing. So will probably be ordering some stuff from ya soon. Good luck in the hunt

  3. That's insane. I'd print out your e-bay comp next time you go in, hand it to them and leave empty handed. You've been a loyal customer of theirs... and it's a thrift store. (love your blog)

    2. I wouldn't be able to do it either but it's what I'd want to do. Keep us posted if the box ends up selling.

  4. I had a laugh when I read your title! I was in a thrift a couple of weeks ago and they had a blenko pitcher for sale for over $200. They had a little card explaining that it was worth $400-600. Right. Went home and found it on ebay for $35. Went in yesterday and it was gone. Yikes!

    1. That must have been some pitcher! I think people think because it's a thrift store its a bargain but I find you have to be careful. Thrift stores have really caught on in the past 2 years. Hope I don't have to eat my shoes when I go back to the thrift store to see the box gone.
