Yardsale - Walmart Galore

Missed this monster huge rich lawyer estate sale yesterday cause I thought it was the following week. It was so crazy I hear that people drove down from NY and PA, yeah that crazy!

Bummed about missing what was probably the event of the summer just decided to drive to 7 yardsales around the neighborhood. Honestly, I think people only shop at Walmart, for all the plastic and kid crap displayed on lawns and in driveways! Only thing I found was this Made in Denmark Modulux / Lego storage box. Estate Sale Fail

Okay, so I didn't actually go to this sale. Thought it was too close to Alexandria and the usual dealer would be there at 5am to clean the house out. Since the house didn't have much in it and it's at least a 1 1/2 hour drive (both ways) I decided to skip it. Plus, I have been having awful luck at estate sales and they are sooooo overpriced now. It did hurt to miss it...

Why I Will NEVER Live Farther South Or In Some Hick Podunk Town

It never fails when I go to some small podunk town that I'm harassed by the local racist white trash. This time, it was Leesburg where some old toothless hillbilly lady tried to inform me of pedestrian law whilst she narrowly missed running down a mother and toddler. Hope she liked my finger.

At two antique shops found a Dansk cutting board and a glittered egg shell ornament for the mother-in-law. I don't know if it's from a kit or made in eastern Europe or somewhere else.

Further on in Frederick, I picked up the orange pedestal at the same stall were I found the Bitossi vase. It still has the original Raymor label identifying it as Bitossi. At another booth my sis made me get the bright orange apple planter probably German (or B.P.F. Heffen Belgium) SOLD. Glad she made me get it 'cause its cute. Found a large unmarked iittala glass bowl but it was chipped.

Moms Finds

Mom found a couple of things for me at what she described "a dumpy church sale" A Chemex coffee pot and a little Danish Nymolle dish illustrated by Hoyrup SOLD.

In addition, there is an advertising mug for Black & Decker by Kiln Craft, England and a 1966 children book "The Travels of Monarch X" I have to mention that as a child, I remember seeing loads of Monarchs during the summer but now, I can't remember the last time I saw one?

Thrift - Italy Wax Matches

After the flea market stopped by my fave thrift where I found nothing but at the old biddie shop found three Danish mugs made by Desiree they look to be 70-80s. My favorite are these little wax matches from Italy perfect for your bridge game-reminds me of I Love Lucy. The box is marked: Guest Matches by Jayne Roberts. And a vintage pack of playing cards.

Estate - Part II

Thought I'd divide this into two sections since there is so much stuff. At my fave thrift found a pair of molded souvenir plywood trays; map of Lake Geneva SOLD and the other of a Swiss train station in the same region. Look! Found a faux Boda Snowball! Nope, it' a real Kosta Boda snowball. B+G, Copenhagen Viking trivet by Antoni SOLD. Passed on a minty roadrunner Couroc bowl as these don't seem to be sellers.

At GoodW noticed the black globe - generally I pass on globes, even donated one last year but I believe black tends to be more unusual. Looking closely most of Africa is French, Germany and Korea are undivided and there is a French Indo-Chine SOLD. Probably dates from 1939-42. Yes, that is more Pyrex...err...they'll go with all my yellow bowls, right? And last, a 1976 Zodiac milkglass mug SOLD and another Boynton mug.

Thrift - Danish Spice Jars

As I've complained previously thrifts has beenslow and empty but I found some interesting items. Brightly colored wood puzzles that look to be Occupied Japan. SOLD

A large collection of vintage mostly Disney children books which I never find anymore SOLD. A cute little brown desk lamp. SOLD. Three Danish spice jars marked Soholm, need to replace the cork stoppers. A teak and stainless steel Lazy Susan marked Germetco Sweden. Plus, two German Leonardo silly glasses (I bought these exact glasses about 13 years at Chiasso back when they used to sell Alessi)

Estate - Gainey Ceramics Planter

Was late getting to the estate sale of a former airline pilots home, boy, they must have lived the life back in the day! The Danish Digsmed teak Lazy Susan with glass trays is in perfect condition. Red flower Vera silk scarf for my sister. And as I was walking out the door noticed the large Californian Gainey Ceramics planter in the garage. Has a small chip on the bottom but it was a decent price.

Thrift - Mom's Finds Nymolle

Mom found me a couple of things. A large ski theme silk scarf for my sister. A little Nymolle cup by Hoyrup with a cute port side scene. And a pair of orange servers. If anyone has any info on the servers let me know. Thanks Mom!

Estate - Tor Viking

Sorry for the delay my blog has been giving me trouble. Went to a mid week estate sale down the street from me, a 1968 contemporary townhouse on a lake. The woman was a high school teacher with a fabulous modern eye who was downsizing.

I did get a cooking set of "Tor Viking"' designed by Turi Gramstad-Oliver for Flint Figgjo, Norway but don't get excited only three pieces are viable. The square dish and bowl have pinhole stains but no chips, the small casserole lid is cracked SOLD, the pitcher has a chip in the lip and a couple of stain, sadness. The large casserole has a small chip on the lid handle but otherwise is in good shape. For sale in my Etsy shop.

Below is a little set of hand-blown cordials if you know the maker please leave a comment.  Believe these to be from the Tivoi line by Per Lutken for Holmegaard. They all vary slightly in height and thickness. I wish, I knew more about glass as she had a large selection of glassware.

A handmade amorphous maple trinket box, a Micheal Lax Lightolier "Lytegem" one of the originals. SOLD. And a darling little pepper pot that I was sorely tempted to keep, from the famed Derry & Toms department store better known for it's Kensington Rooftop Gardens on Kensington High Street, London. Nice little reminder of the store that closed in 1971. Label: Tom & Derry, 75p. Circa 1960-71. SOLD

A small but weighty Swedish vase probably Orrefors since the rest of the vases where labeled as such. In the back a large lotus bowl. Small blue turkish pot, golly I love these SOLD. A Boda Snowball for me. A red wood German village collection SOLD.

Three yellow wool pillows in excellent shape SOLD. Nice large piece of Marimekko fabric by Maija Isola "Pulloposit" (message in a Bottle) 1965. Vera scarf for the sis. Six Vera napkins SOLD. And for my sister a man purse or "Carriel" a handbag used by men in the Antioquia region of Columbia since Colonial times. Stamped: Jerico Envigado.

Thrift - Belgium Jars

Not a crazy day at thrift. Picked an orange fondue pot for my sister-your welcome. Worn Denmark orange spoon for 10 cents. Another Tiki mug made in Japan. For Sale

Vilac "Noddy" car made in France (found a wood Vilac apple bank last year) Can't say no to little wood toys! Ran into my glass guy, he mentioned he purchase a 1930ish mixer pre-electic for $25-didn't get to see it but I would guess it's a little earlier.

Thrift - Mom's Finds for Me!

Mom picked up a few things from an estate sale and a couple of thrifts. Hidden in the back is a red Bodum carafe made in Denmark. Four red wood Swedish candle holders with original Bloomingdales  and Woodward & Lothrup dept. store tags. 1948 Lappland Finland book. Inside the book is a studio portrait dated 1948. Green electrical storage drawers. SOLD. W. Germany heart mug SOLD.

Thrift - Rosenthal Mug

Digsmed teak spice rack 'cause I'm stupid and one day I'll find the spice jars, hah. Rosenthal Studio Linie "Flash One" 1985 Memphis mug by Dorothy Hafner.

Set of 6 stackable avocado mugs, made in Japan. Found an unused green tree mug separately but I think it may have originally come with the mugs? For sale.

Thrift - Red Sort of Day

Sorry for the photo I'm in a rush today. How could I resist the little red anglepoise desk lamp (oddly on a lamp streak) even though it's made in Taiwan. Some old hipster tried to dissuade me from it but I had my heart set on the little red sucker. Red wool owl pillow with a tag "Kunturi, made in Bolivia." Lucite floating Seth Thomas clock.

At GoodW found some more glass dishes but no tray? Holmegaard Glasværk Denmark 1958-1965, 1967-1973. They come with the complimentary "we throw 'em around chips."

Thrift - Sign of Better Times?

Small grass lampshade and white lotus bowl. Little German Steinbach chef ornament. Adorable owl string art. Brio car missing three people (I can't resist wood toys) Handmade inscribed vase signed Wright '72.

Finally found something Danish! Honestly, I can't remember the last time? It's a small salt dish by Knapstup, Denmark. Going to Rachel since she collects these thanks to me! I even brought her back some from Denmark :)

Orange sewing box made by Wilson of Sunbury PA-thought my sister asked for one? And a metal storage box. Someone donated an old office. Most of the items where steel and made in Ohio. And you ask where all the jobs have gone?

Thrift - More of the Blahs

Well, I'd call todays thrifts a bust except for the leather camera case by Coast, made in USA. Sure my sister will want it.

Chia Pet-esque pot that is a rip-off off Lisa Larsons cat but still cute SOLD. Glass jar with cork lid. Yet another English tin SOLD. And a Dansk pot lid...because I hoping the rest of it will show up...

Thrift - Drought Continues

Only went to my a fave thrift store this morning. Arrived early too. Didn't make a difference. Shelves are still bare. English tin, third piece of "Pottery Craft" I've ever found in the wild and a pair of Tupperware bowls for me. Plus, a small silver plated/chrome Dansk bear designed by Gunnar Cyren, made in Japan.

Estate - More Chemex

Wasted lots of gas this morning going to the crappiest crap estate sales. Returned to one from last week. German woman was a hoarder...of mugs...ugly ones. I think, she might have been a teacher. I restrained myself from picking up 3 Boynton cat mugs.

The next had hellish parking full of honking horns and screaming people. I headed for the kitchen and saw a price of $5 for a plain ole mug and had that sinking feeling. Lots of old fashioned froo froo items not to my taste but I did find a box of small indent Christmas balls. Climbed a shaky stool to grab a Chemex with handle above the fridge. I shouldn't have left the box of filters, dang.

Headed to a 3 thrift/consignment stores in the area. Now these are in one of the wealthiest areas in the country and these places have the same junk I find in other areas. Do rich people not donate? At one, I found everything below. I can't resist wood Polish dolls. Ducks logo teak Dansk cheese board with hidden knife. A heavy corked pot signed "Anna Hogberg, Sweden 1991" Plus, pair small 1975 Vignelli for Heller glass souffle bowls/ramekin.$20ea

Thrift - German Barometer & Vera Scarves

Stopped by three thrifts on the way to my moms. At the first I picked up the tiny green turkish pot, a polka dot polyester Vera scarf for the sister and a silk Vera corn on husks scarf also for the sister. And how could I resist the cute little German barometer. The German woman running the thrift explained if the woman came through the door it meant good weather for the following day and if the man with raincoat and umbrella came through it meant rain for the following day.

At GoodW. I found the lotus bowl but passed on a huge Circus themed cookie jar hand-painted in Italy. The sticker on the bottom said "Made in Italy for Saks Fifth Avenue" (prob. early 80's) It was in excellent shape with the top being the round tent topped by a flag. (I really need a camera phone to tweet pics) I put it down cause the thought of packing it scared me. Two minutes later, I looked back to see an overly excited white dude holding it. Hmm, I think I made a mistake. The last thrift was a bust. I still miss that cookie jar.

Mom went to an estate sale and picked up a Rosti Denmark pitcher and utensils. Dunoon Scotland mug. And another plastic desk organizer SOLD.
