Thrift - Danish Spice Jars

As I've complained previously thrifts has beenslow and empty but I found some interesting items. Brightly colored wood puzzles that look to be Occupied Japan. SOLD

A large collection of vintage mostly Disney children books which I never find anymore SOLD. A cute little brown desk lamp. SOLD. Three Danish spice jars marked Soholm, need to replace the cork stoppers. A teak and stainless steel Lazy Susan marked Germetco Sweden. Plus, two German Leonardo silly glasses (I bought these exact glasses about 13 years at Chiasso back when they used to sell Alessi)

Thrift - More Cute German Plaques

Paid a lot for these vintage German wall plaques even at 1/2 off but I couldn't resist the cuteness. The lady at the secondhand shop dropped one and chipped it, aurgh!

At another shop found zodiac mug and fish Stavangerflint of Norway mug, the rim has a little chip, sadness. Little stainless steel & rosewood tray from Japan. At the last shop found a second Liberty of London silk scarf for my sister.

Thrift - Herman Miller Mug

Braved the old biddy shop-again nothing. Went to my fave thrift store which was dead and pretty empty of goods. Hopefully, my big box of donations will help and got rid of that UUUGly black "Skulls & Bones" sweater belonging to my bro-in-laws, phew-wee.

Picked up a Christmas make your own ornaments Pom-Pom kit. Blue enamel Turkish pot. Passed on a mint small blue enamel single serving coffee pot maybe it'll be there next time? And a stainless steel German WMF (higher end) butter dish but it's really scratched-don't know what I was thinking? Passed on a Pyrex wood stopper wine carafe (see bottom pic) a second mistake!

At GoodW. I scored a Herman Miller mug! Actually, I went back for this 'cause I thought for sure a Herman Miller mug would be marked on the bottom. SOLD Plus 56 cents for the blue Rosti Denmark spoon.

Thrift - Russel Wright

So my sister went out to a estate that was rubbishy. I don't mind dirty so much but complete junk! And dirty pricey junk!

Disappointed by such a stinky sale we stopped by three thrift stores and at one I found eight Russel Wright "Iroquois" tea cups sans saucers. A lone Ecko Japan knife. And how could I resist a pink glazed "Plum Gekkeikan" Kokeshi Japan decanter. I have a highly collectible white Benihana one too.

Estate Score! Arne Jacobsen Cylinda Fondue

On the way to the Post Office I happened to pass an estate sale with the worlds small signs. But boy, was it it worth it! Saw this baby from across the room! It's Arne Jacobsen's stainless steel 1964-67 "Cylinda Line" fondue pot for Stelton Denmark. 

Originally designed in 1952 by world-renowned designer Eva Zeisel, is the "Classic Century" teapot this is a current version marked Crate & Barrel, made in England. SOLD A small matte white "Van Briggle" of Colorado Springs pot I picked up super cheap! Guess, it pays to watch "Antiques Roadshow" on occasion. SOLD  

A silk scarf made in Italy for the sister. And the Richard Scarry book for myself. I hope to one day find some of his Big Books because they were a favorite as a child.

Thrift - Nambe Bowl & Snoopy

Nothing exciting from thrifting today. Should have gone to estate sales instead. Three Snoopy root beer glasses.

National Airlines glasses, circa 1965. A little $2 mirror for myself dated 1979 and made in the USA. Oh dear, it's makes things look very big! Milk glass vase. More Butterprint Pyrex for myself, paid $2. And 'Town & Country' Pyrex that match two other pieces I found. SOLD

Little yellow Glasbake bowl, found a pink one a month or so back.

Below, think I overpaid for the 569 Nambe Butterfly bowl because it's not in perfect condition. It was first designed by New Mexico sculptor Richard K. Thomas in 1967. This is a current release of the bowl that retails for $115. It's also made in America! SOLD

Little yellow Tupperware bowl. Green lacquer tray. Pair of Dorothy Thorpe style silver rimmed glasses SOLD. Pair of colonial Avon heads for the hubby. A lone 'Arabesque' Denby of England fork (1964-79) And a little cup marked Denmark.

Thrift Score! Dansk Odin Flatware

Well, after the disappointing 95 vendors community yardsale I headed to my fave thrift store. Probably not the best idea as I was rather sick.

I don't usually look in the cutlery bin 'cause I hate thumbing through hundreds of knives. But today, the bins were quite empty and I saw brown handled forks which I always pick up. Lo and behold, I saw the Dansk Odin knives. And with the Ducks logo meaning they are early production. Six knives, four forks and a smaller fork. Where do you think the rest of the set is? The thrift sticker dates them 8/22 so maybe someone picked up the others?

22 pieces of 'EKCO, Eternia, Japan' with faux wood composite handles.  Probably from the 60's these are quite collectible. (Have 5 other pieces too)

A piece of owl pottery. 1966 Weight Watchers scale for 25 cents, it's heavier than my later ones. And a little wooden butter spreader stamped 'Sweden'

Thrift Score - At GoodWill?

I'll never understand the GoodWill by my house. Most times I stop by, the shelves are empty but for HomeGoods and tons of 'Made in China' crap. But today was different.

A horribly tacky 80's ice cream mug that I couldn't resist. A Selandia stainless steel server and a rosewood server, both made in Denmark. I love when materials are mixed.

My best find of the day is the 1959 ZooLine hungry hungry hippo trinket box. The tail looks freshly broken probably at the thrift store. He need a little love. There was a lady standing in front of the shelf and when I saw the hippo, I said 'Excuse me' and shot my hand out in front of her. She gave me that sort of dazed look. Hey, I wasn't going to take the chance she'd see him. The photo is blurry because the light was very dim. SOLD

A lone knife to add to several I have already collected. A blue 1976 Bicentennial Ball jar that I got for the hubby but I just might sell? A loud 1970's stoneware plate signed Mikasa 'Indian Feast, Half Moon' I don't believe it to be by the elusive Ben Seibel SOLD.

A yellow & teak thermos I recognized immediately because I'd just seen it on A La Modern's site. Designed by 'G. Rosendahl, Falkenberg Sweden, Made in USA.' I've seen ones made in Sweden online. The tag on the bottom calls it a 'Keeper' 'International Coffee & Tea' 'Camarillo CA' Otherwise, know as "The Coffee Bean" established in 1963. I can only guess this was sold in stores in the 60-70's. Went back to the thrift store - guilty of crappy condition and beer goggle judgement.

More Bodum glasses -  looked and looked for the cork coasters. And a pair of unused stacking Christmas mugs from the 60's, what great graphics and colors.

A very tall Pinocchio made in Italy. I almost bought one in Cville a few weeks ago. Glad I waited. I have a growing Pino. collection SOLD. A leopard print vase of a lady names 'Emily' signed Susan Paley by Gant. I picked some serious tack today SOLD. Four mid 70's to mid 80's Sandra Boyton mugs. For Sale in my Etsy store.

Ladies, let this be a lesson not to apply self tanner! A funkadelic Skipper doll. Her butt says '1965 Mattel, Made in Japan' Her arms face and legs are a weird yellow and sticky. Her leg is broken, I mean broken as in taped together! Don't know what I will do with her? She was $2 so I said 'what the hell" more beer goggles. Behind her sits a milk glass vase.

Found a second 1979 Chein metal recipe card box that has never been used SOLD. A cute little jam jar. I was attracted to it because of the rattan handle. It's signed on the bottom "handpainted".

A pair a Murano glass paper weights. I think the left one is old. Unfortunately I noticed a crack in it when I got home. The other has a foil label. It's not older than the 80's SOLD.

Three bundles of blue garland tinsel, made in Germany, probably 60's. I think crafters will like it and more beer goggles.

Thrift Score - Alessi of Italy

Sign, another terrible picture. It must have been overcast when I shot this... Hit 9 stores today and found most of the items at two of them. Sometimes you just don't find much.

Scored with a recent Stainless steel fruit basket by Alessi, Italy, 'This was the first object to emerge from research by the internal engineering department into wire-bending technology, in the late 40s.' I think the square is more rare? It's super expensive to buy new. SOLD

A clear magenta Dansk tray designed by Gunnar Cyren, have what, 5 now? Little Pyrex bowl in Butterfly Gold pattern. Another Ingrid picnic ball, one already for sale in my Etsy shop. Some white Dansk Tiny Taper Candles. SOLD

At my usual haunts (where I always find loads) I only found an Iittala beer mug designed by Oiva Toikka in 1973 (found another a few months back) SOLD

And a "Federal Glass" Cancer  Zodiac mug. But for once no Heller, sad face.

Set of Bodum bowls, I love anything Bodum with cork coasters, don't know if they are worth anything. Kosta Boda Snowball for $3 that has a chip on the bottom but it for my votive collection. Green & orange what I thought were egg cups but now I think they are sake cups, have several white ones too.

Stack of 1960-70's children books. Including a wonderfully illustrated one featuring an owl. Postage scale from 1971 that I use all the time. Three high quality Danish stainless steel candle holders by Lundtofte. For Sale.

Oh, I found a rare white trash can by Japanese industrial designer Makio Hasuike (Gedy in Italy) but it was badly broken, darn sloppy thrift stores.

Thrift - Ben Seibel & Kari Stavangerflint

Made the rounds to some thrift stores after the crappy estate sales. Lately, I've been coming across a lot of Georges Briard but always in terrible shape. But this 1960's double welled gold glass tray is in great condition. In front of the tray are 4 Bodum glasses (fortunately, I have extra coasters)

Pair of Blue Delft Canal houses one still filled with liquor SOLD. And a rare to find a complete children set by Stavangerflint of Norway illustrated by Kari Nyqvist.

Passed on a set of Kliban cat glasses because I thought the price was rather high, was a mistake to pass up.

At GoodWill I picked up Americana Pyrex for myself. In the back is a flower power fabric tray in blues and greens. SOLD

Five Mikasa Duplex plates by Ben Seibel in the Dahlia pattern designed in 1971. They are heavy, good quality and in excellent condition. Where are the tea cups and the rest of the set?

Also a set of Rosewood and steel servers made in Japan. These are in mint condition and of excellent quality. SOLD

And a lovely little thin white Swedish porcelain bowl marked "Upsala Ekeby"made at the Karlskrona Porcelain Factory. Might be a sugar bowl? This is the first time I've ever found Upsala Ekeby in the wild.

Thrift - Raymond Peynet plate

So I returned to my Old Biddie thrift today, hoping they might have more mid century items and what luck, they did! I found a small but weighty German butter pan with rosewood handle.

A signed trinket box from Mexico very much in the style of Ken Edwards. I'm unfamiliar with the artist signature and know little about Mexican art or craftsmen. For sale on my Etsy site. I looked at that Wiirkala vase again, sigh.

But my most favorite find was this $4.50 Rosenthal Studio Linie pin dish or coaster by the French illustrator Raymond Peynet. How could I resist the squirrel?

Thrift - Chemex

Thrift stores seem really empty of goods maybe because people are busy with summer vacations. Still I managed to find a few things that are decent. Cartoon puzzle for myself. I often like to do these and then return them to the thrift store.

Jacksons of Piccadilly Tea tin. Replica of a early Victorian tea caddy. Another white lotus bowl (I keep telling myself, I'm going to sell the vast collection and I'm not hoarding)

Berggrens Swedish style "The second day of Christmas" tile with felt back and hook. SOLD

The largest 10 cup Chemex coffee decanter. Missing wood collar but a new replacement can be ordered through the Chemex website. This well designed flask is in the permanent collection of the MOMA and Smithsonian. Invented and designed by German Chemist Peter Schlumbohm in 1941 this apparatus is supposed to brew coffee without any bitterness.

Found another display cabinet (the other is gold) These are actually made to fit between the studs of your wall. All you have to do is cut out a hole in your drywall between the studs and fit the cabinet into the space. You don't even have to finish the drywall because the cabinet frame will cover the unfinished edges. SOLD.

A large tin recipe box by J. Chen. I have a few of their lithographed tins with all the history in a previous post. Circa 1970's. Made in the USA. Little clothes pin Scottish cleaning woman for my wood figure collection. Large set of really nice good quality wood handle fondue forks made in Japan.

Thrift - Yuck! Fur

Mink collar I found for my sister at the bottom of a bin. In good knick but going into the freezer. SO Gross!

Found all of the following at my Fave thrift store. Heller white plastic ice bucket by Italian designer Sergio Asti. I have a yellow one but it has a crack. Circa 1970's. SOLD Unsigned little pottery piece with interesting green & metallic glaze. Probably nothing special.

Digsmed of Denmark teak & brass nutcracker. I didn't realize until getting home it come with a teak nut-board. Which I find a week later. SOLD Yet another blueplate from Denmark. I don't know why I pick these up? Made by Desiree designed by Mads Stage depicting Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen" Company now defunct.

One of my favorite finds is this little wood apple money bank & it still has the key. Made by "Vilas" their banks are usually brightly lacquered red & yellow apples, pears, owls, and mushrooms. It's strange that this one is unfinished SOLD.

I can't resist German pottery even if it isn't even my style. White bisque Dogwood vase made by Kaiser of Germany, designed by artist Michaela Frey. Numbered 652/7. Circa 1970's. Kaiser made really cool Op Art vases too. SOLD.

3D textured stoneware pot signed "Freud" (pictured below) It has a glorious translucent turquoise glaze on the interior. Late 1960-1970's. Tiny hand painted wood clogs from the Netherlands. Circa 1950-50's. Set of 10 wood and brass rivet hor d'ourves forks. Just cleaned & oiled. SOLD.

Thrift Estate: Air France Cutlery & Gold Mirrored Shelf

This was a surprise from a rather bad thrift store! Flatware set for "Air France Economy Class" 1978. Designed by famed French industrial designer, Raymond Loewy (Shell, Greyhound, Lucky Strike, Exxon logos) in 1975. Marked "Design CEI" (Compagnie d´Esthetique Industrielle) and "OC." Collection of the Museum of Fine Art Boston SOLD.

Stopped at two estate sales after my doctor appointment and found vintage "Birds" book, I have a growing collection. I like to rescue them. Collection of tiny wood rabbit & bird miniature ornaments SOLD. Pair Austrian blown glass mushroom SOLD.

Italian blown glass spotted cat ornament. Set handmade linen squares with embroidered roosters. Maritime bedspread circa 1950, I don't know much about textiles, freshly laundered (not pictured.)

The following day, I stopped at a dirty, disappointing & overpriced even at 50% off estate sale. The gold mirror miniatures shelf is for my growing Swedish & wood figure collection. Need to clean. Can I get the hubby to cut a whole in the wall & insert this frame?

A 1960's "Father's Day" Hallmark card with pink sparkles. The sparkles are hot pink and didn't photograph. Three gold metal belts & a gray wool steel stud hat for my sister. Love the detail of the cut steel studs. Made by "Neumann-Endler" of Danbury Conn, line: Electa. (Danbury was known as the Hat City of the world.) Picked up a "Vera" 1960's summer top and head scarf too, no photo.

Thrift Score: Pomona Jam Pot

Found at a thrift store I only go if I'm in the area. Amazingly, they had better stuff this time. Usually, everything is priced so high it sits on the shelf for months on end.

What luck, instantly spotted an Arabia of Finland, "Pomona series" jam pot. "Mansikka" or Strawberry pattern designed by Raija Uosikkinen (shape is by Kaj Franck.) This one is dated 1971 but the series was manufactured from 1965-75. Excellent condition SOLD.

Pair of military figures (though I don't know what branch wears white hats?) from the English game "Skittles." Originally, ten of them sat on a pegged cart. These are for my personal collection of wood figures. Rescued Swedish figure probably 1970's. Seriously overpriced for damaged piece & had to talk cashier down on price. It's missing a flag or something? Guessing the hole on top is for a candle. Extremely well made rosewood & stainless steel candle holder. Only one & paid a lot for it but didn't want to leave it behind. I've seen a pair before but can't remember the maker. Chein Industries lithographed Spaghetti tin dated 1979, Made USA SOLD. Have matching recipe tin. I should have gone during Xmas I bet they had a lot of Swedish ornaments!

Estate & Thrift: Moms Iittala Finds!

Mom always manages great finds. She found all this at one estate. Crystal diamond candlestick holder. Crystal Lenox decanter. Etched "Lenox" on base. Blenko clear & indigo candle holder. Made in West Virginia. Foil label circa 1950-82. Blue has damage to underside base.

Textured beaked glass carafe, prob. Swedish. 1950-80's. Possibly Kosta Boda. Can't find any info on it. Wish is was Timo Sarpaneva.

Stelton stainless steel & rosewood forks. New in box. Made in Denmark. Circa 1960's. They even designed the box! SOLD

Super thin green "i-series" glass Iittala bowl by Timo Sarpaneva of Finland, 5"h x 9"d. I love it! Matching 9" tall "i-series" Iittala vase (might be in fact a carafe?) Made in Finland. Older triangle stickers. Prob. 1956-64.

Since my sister was home for Christmas, we piled into the car and took a trip down to Charlottesville, VA to get a fix at a favorite restaurant Mas. www.mastapas.com. Before dinner, we stopped in a vintage store. My sister picked up a few pieces of jewelery (forgot to photo) & a silver necklace for me, thanks.

I bought this unmarked Ceramic Candlestick Scandiv. Girl hoping it was by Lisa Larson of Sweden. But it's actually, Fitz & Floyd, Toscany. Toscany was a label used by Fitz & Floyd for a line of stoneware figurines made in the 70's. Made in Japan. Sold

4" Bright Orange Sake Vase. Thought this was a bud vase but a friend informed me it was for sake. Sticker "Japan." Post war. I like to rescue stainless steel servers since most people don't care for them but I have noticed the prices going WAYYYY up! God forbid, if they are marked "Denmark." Adding another, made in Denmark, stainless steel server with rosewood handles to the collection.

Estate: Stig Lindberg "Spisa Ribb" & Edna Arnow Pottery

This is one of those estate sales you find two or three times a year! It was a Friday, lightly snowing & a bit out in the suburbs, so maybe that's why so few people showed up? I didn't even see dealers? I was looking for Stig Lindberg's dish set I'd seen in the advert. And it was still there! Yikes with a big price tag! 1955 Gustavsberg of Sweden, "Spisa Ribb" dish set, by Swedens most famous designer Stig Lindberg. eight cups & saucers, four open sugar bowls/dessert bowls, eight extra saucers, thirteen 10" dinner plates, ten 8" Salad/Breakfast plates (one has chip under rim), ten 6.5" Bread & Butter/dessert plates. SOLD OUT except for 1 saucer.

Also Rescued another 1960's Couroc of California large tray. I don't see word trays often. SOLD

Trio Danish stainless steel servers with Rosewood handles. Usually the lid is missing. Probably by Lundtofte. SOLD

1960's Hand-Blown Italian Glass Goblets by Artisian Carlo Moretti. Set of 8 Smoke Cased White Goblets & 5 Cordials

Returned to the sale with my mom on the last day when everything was 50% off. Unfortunately, I was rushed for a lunch appointment & had to dash through the house. I missed a box full of lovely vintage Valentine cards in unused mint condition, 1920-50's. What was I thinking? I also had to pass on 4 cute yellow enamelled wood chairs, a bright pinky red enamelled danish chair & bright red roller work chair from Denmark. The estate seller didn't want to come down in price. I didn't think, I could make money reselling them since the condition wasn't the best on the enamel no matter how adorable, sad face.

Mom picked up a cool mid century walnut lamp table combo. I'll try & get a photo.

Recieved this leaflet on my return visit came with Stig Lindberg's "Spisa Ribb" dish set. The estate lady saved it for me as she thought I might return. She told me I missed the "Terma" black dishes pictured in the leaflet, though, I don't remember seeing them?

Large glazed "Ribbon" ceramic container for wheat flour & smaller for wheat germ. Made in Denmark by Knabstrup Keramics. Circa 1970's.

Boxed Dansk Green Glass Stackable Candleholders designed by Jens Quistgaard 1960's. Price tag says: "Kaufmann's Dept. Store $6.95." According to the inflation calculator that's $55 in todays money. An interesting note, a lover of International Style, Kaufmann commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build "Falling Water" in Virginia and Richard Nuetra for the "Kaufmann House" in Palm Springs.

Saw this the first day, liked the shape but because I'm unfamiliar with pottery, decided to pass. Well, luck would have it, when I returned, there it still stood, and half off. By far, my fave find of the weekend & my second piece of pottery (Lisa Larson "Lion" was first.) Think I paid $8 or $6 for it? Large "Edna Arnow" art pottery. 9"dia x 8"H. Upside-down drip glaze. Turns out she was an established 1950's Chicago artist.
