Thrift - Antje Vogel and Vera Scarf

Feel that I haven't thrifted in a while... Here are the finds; a cute Sevi growth chart by German illustrator Antje Vogel SOLD, little red Turkish pot, 2 glass jars SOLD and 4 tiles by Lilian Vernon and because of all the GoodW tape I didn't see that one was chipped SOLD.

And a silk blend Vera scarf, a silk Liz Claiborne scarf and a vintage Lucky Charms hanky. This was a lot of work to get through thrifts swarming with kids (I'm disturbed that HeadStart is no longer funded) and strollers.

Antiquing In Itsy Bitsy Hell

My friend Amy and I decided to go antiquing in PA. Lordy, girdy-hurdy heaven! All itsy-bitsies! Everything was the same and virtually no furniture. Oh and the prices were surprisingly high.

I only ended up getting three things. A Vera scarf of pink locks and keys, I believe this to be one of her very early designs. Trio of German wood angels and a Lamont linen tea towel.

Other then waking up at 5:30 am it was a fun day of looking at junk and eating a humongous pretzel. But you won't find me going back!

Here is some of the things we saw. I really wanted the Emsa Germany breakfast set cause I love plastic and orange. The Wiinblad poster was priced retail at $225. As you can tell modern was slim pickings.

Besides the Christmas booth (were I found the Vera scarf) the fox and lion were my favorite sightings. This woman sold vintage Lea Stein jewelry and contemporary French plastic jewelry. She said new designs were cut from old stock Galalith (similar to Bakelite.) Below are examples of French artist Marie-Christine Pavone's work.

Thrift - Bad Thrifts Make Me Cranky

Nothing all that exciting here. Visited 2 thrifts on the way to a store. Shelves were bare at the GWill but did manage to pick up the Boynton mug and a silk scarf for the sis.

At a crappy crappy over-priced thrift for the first time found some items. A Vera "Lacy Fern" vase for Mikasa. Three children books, Mickey Mouse SOLD. Black bear cubs originally designed by Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Pottery in Tennessee SOLD. Hopefully all these items will be up for sale soon in my Etsy shop.

Thrift - Not Russel Wright

Decided I was going to Bikram yoga in the morning instead of thrifting...thrifting would have been more fun! So went at lunch to my old biddy store and they had loads of scarves unfortunately priced high. Found a lovely abstract green one but had bleached areas (forgot my phone) Picked out the polka dot poly Vera scarf for the sis.

And vibrant green Dansk fish trivet / wall hanging SOLD and a cork Pyrex decanter SOLD - haven't found one of these in ages! Passed on a pair of Conant Ball chairs (which I thought were by Russel Wright, I was wrong) thrift store crack priced at $125 and I don't need more chairs no matter how comfy. Bombed at the other two stores.

Estate Bust - Moller Chairs

This weekend there was another estate sale advertising danish furniture by my moms house. The fiasco began with the numbers left outside the day before being stolen and some old man was passing out his own numbers the morning of the sale - lets just say people were pissed!

The Moller chairs and table were sold before the sale day. He was asking $1000 but sold for $700. Mom said they were mint and would have looked perfect in my dining room. The nice credenza was sold the day before too. What's the point of the sale if your going to have a private one first. The Saarinen Knoll white set sold for $400 and is now for sale for $800.

 

Decided to go on the second day and there wasn't much left. Passed on a bright green Kartell bin cause of melted plastic damage, so sad. Some of the remnants found are three Boynton mugs new in the box, yellow enamel turkish pot SOLD.

Yellow Copco Spice rack. Silk Vera scarves for the sis. A ceramic mod vase by Naaman Artline of Israel SOLD and some little tin houses. Passed on lots of mismatched Rosenthal and very overpriced large collection of Swedish glass vases.

Thrift Part I - Another Scale & Another Mug

At my fave thrift found The Bellevue tin, made in England. Another corked jar. A very cool large Terraillon scale, made in France. Huge Schmidt chest tin, made in Germany. A Holly Hobby-esque mug. Older Scottish Patterson's shortbread tin back before Britain went metric (oops, the thrift store charged me 10x the price)

Thrift - Boynton Card

At the old Biddie thrift I was looking at an interesting brass and glass coffee table likely 1980s - will try and get a photo next time. All I found were a pair a rainbow mugs SOLD. This shop is seriously picked over by "The Antiques Roadshow" (I say this because it is all they ever talk about!) ladies volunteering.

At the next thrift found a Sandra Boynton card - doubt it's a popular one, oh well. Price Charles & Diana 1981 wedding mug SOLD and a Marimekko tulip mug SOLD. And last a rose & thistle silk Vera scarf for the sis. Had enough of thrifting and decided to skip GWill. Visit my Etsy shop.

Estate - Gainey Ceramics Planter

Was late getting to the estate sale of a former airline pilots home, boy, they must have lived the life back in the day! The Danish Digsmed teak Lazy Susan with glass trays is in perfect condition. Red flower Vera silk scarf for my sister. And as I was walking out the door noticed the large Californian Gainey Ceramics planter in the garage. Has a small chip on the bottom but it was a decent price.

Estate - Tacky Christmas

Late start this morning but I still had to stand in line though just for 10 minutes. There were a few pieces of Danish furniture in the listing (you can see the photos at the bottom) of course they were gone in fact the entire house had been wiped out. And the prices I saw were expensive. Left within 10 minutes.

The second estate didn't have many people and the house was packed full. The woman's taste was super cheap froo-froo and the prices thought they were French froo-froo. Picked up a garish ceramic lite Christmas tree, missing one bulb. Two tea towels and a silk blend large Vera scarf. Passed on a few blue, red & white Vera scarfs that were too spendy.

Hit three thrifts in between and found zippity.

The last estate belonged to a hoarder with lots of Catholic Jesus pics. Opened a kitchen drawer to be greeted by a layer of mouse poop, yum. Looked like the large 1930's house had been empty for a year or two. She had a large collection of 1920-30s toasters and hand mixers. The basement was full of antique tools probably overpriced since they were all still there. Out back was a walled tiered secret garden (I need a camera!) that must have been a-sight-to-behold 10 or 20 years ago. I did see a sold smaller Danish teak credenza for $100.

The only thing I picked up was embossed "Jno. Greenhow Wms.bg 1770" bottle made by Blenko for Colonial Williamsburg. It's a reproduction with remnant foil label. Nice and heavy with rough pontil on base. prob. 1960s. Well, that's all I have to show for an entire morning.

Thrift - Vera Scarves

Stopped at a thrift store near estate sale and picked up a few things. Little ceramic owl tea light, made in Japan. And a heavy glass concentric circle vase with polished pommel. If anyone has any info on it let me know.

For my sis I found three Vera scarves, a Pucci style and pale pink silk pony & steeple chase scarf. Left two Vera's cause the patterns were bleh.

Estate - Tor Viking

Sorry for the delay my blog has been giving me trouble. Went to a mid week estate sale down the street from me, a 1968 contemporary townhouse on a lake. The woman was a high school teacher with a fabulous modern eye who was downsizing.

I did get a cooking set of "Tor Viking"' designed by Turi Gramstad-Oliver for Flint Figgjo, Norway but don't get excited only three pieces are viable. The square dish and bowl have pinhole stains but no chips, the small casserole lid is cracked SOLD, the pitcher has a chip in the lip and a couple of stain, sadness. The large casserole has a small chip on the lid handle but otherwise is in good shape. For sale in my Etsy shop.

Below is a little set of hand-blown cordials if you know the maker please leave a comment.  Believe these to be from the Tivoi line by Per Lutken for Holmegaard. They all vary slightly in height and thickness. I wish, I knew more about glass as she had a large selection of glassware.

A handmade amorphous maple trinket box, a Micheal Lax Lightolier "Lytegem" one of the originals. SOLD. And a darling little pepper pot that I was sorely tempted to keep, from the famed Derry & Toms department store better known for it's Kensington Rooftop Gardens on Kensington High Street, London. Nice little reminder of the store that closed in 1971. Label: Tom & Derry, 75p. Circa 1960-71. SOLD

A small but weighty Swedish vase probably Orrefors since the rest of the vases where labeled as such. In the back a large lotus bowl. Small blue turkish pot, golly I love these SOLD. A Boda Snowball for me. A red wood German village collection SOLD.

Three yellow wool pillows in excellent shape SOLD. Nice large piece of Marimekko fabric by Maija Isola "Pulloposit" (message in a Bottle) 1965. Vera scarf for the sis. Six Vera napkins SOLD. And for my sister a man purse or "Carriel" a handbag used by men in the Antioquia region of Columbia since Colonial times. Stamped: Jerico Envigado.

Thift - Drought

So I made a long trek to 7 thrift stores I frequent every month or so. Shelves were empty-I mean 20 items on the shelf and they were broken or pieces of Ziploc plastic. Above is an English tin, a Scandinavian style mug and a Kilborn Aloha cat mug.

I have been finding a lot of scarves lately? For my sister I picked up a ladybug Vera Flowerpot scarf, 70-80s silk Vera neck scarf, a huge 1960s polka dot Echo, Japan silk scarf and graphic Galla Japan scarf. Had to pass on a very cute silk Vera scarf because of a multitude of yellow stains-unsure could be washed out.

Finally "The Four Musicians of Bremen" wall hanging in mint condition, probably German. The style reminds me of Marimekko fabrics, love the red mushrooms and foliage.

The last two photos are things I passed. A 1990 Bodum box set designed by Carsten Jorgensen except mine had the creamer and sugar but was missing 4 coaster. Too pricey. And last thing was the "Dish Doctor" designed in 1997 by Marc Newson for Magis, Italy. Had wear around the rim of the utensil holders maybe a mistake to pass?
